Maine Author Paul Doiron Spends Day with Lincoln Academy Students
Lincoln Academy recently hosted Paul Doiron, successful Maine author and Editor in Chief of Down East: The Magazine of Maine. Doiron’s day at LA was sponsored by a Maine Humanities Council grant awarded to Cathi Howell, Lincoln Academy’s Director of Library Services. The day began with Doiron joining LA’s Bagels & Books group for a discussion of his first novel, The Poacher’s Son. Participants, including several students, numerous faculty members, administrators, community members, parents, and Senator Chris Johnson were treated to hearing Doiron read a selection from The Poacher’s Son and had an opportunity to ask him questions and share reactions to his book in the intimate setting of the Lincoln Academy Library.
Later that morning, Doiron met with a senior English class taught by Cathy Jewitt. Jewitt’s class was also reading The Poacher’s Son and students were thrilled with the opportunity to meet with Doiron personally in the comfort of their own classroom. Students asked Doiron a variety of questions regarding the book and his experiences in connection with writing and his work as a Registered Maine Guide. Doiron shared a personal story of being struck by lightening, an event that helped spark his career as writer!
Doiron wrapped up his morning at Lincoln Academy by meeting with the entire ninth grade class in LA’s Poe Theater. Bonnie Kanavich, Head of the English Department at LA, prepared freshman English students for their session by having them read a selection from The Poacher’s Son and one of Doiron’s editorials from Down East. Doiron discussed his career path as writer, read from The Poacher’s Son, and entertained numerous questions from the students.
Over the course of the morning, Doiron impacted a wide range of students and adults. It was a truly unique opportunity for Lincoln Academy to host such a talented and successful Maine author and the excitement generated around his books at LA has been contagious. All three of his novels featuring the character Mike Bowditch, a Maine Game Warden, including the recently released Bad Little Falls are flying off the library shelves….and that is a wonderful thing!
