Announcement of Head-Elect

Dear Members of the Lincoln Academy Community,

We are pleased to announce that David B. Sturdevant, Principal of Fryeburg Academy, Fryeburg, Maine, coed, grades 9-12, 625 students, has accepted the invitation of the Board of Trustees to succeed Jay Pinkerton as the Head of Lincoln Academy effective July 1, 2013.

Beginning last September, the Search Committee worked with our search consultant, Deirdre Ling, of Educators’ Collaborative, and reviewed the credentials of candidates from all over the country and abroad. Following preliminary confidential interviews with a number of highly qualified candidates, the Search Committee invited seven of these applicants to visit the Academy, where they met at length with the Advisory Committee (representing faculty/staff members, parents, past trustees and community members) and with the full Search Committee, as well as students and other key personnel. On March 14, 2013, the Search Committee selected David B. Sturdevant as their nominee to the Board of Trustees to serve as the next Head of Lincoln Academy. The Board of Trustees unanimously accepted the nomination of the Search Committee.

David has spent thirty-three years in education. In addition to his recent position, he has served in various other administrative capacities at Fryeburg Academy since 1985. Prior to that he taught at Hartford High School in Vermont and Wheaton Warrenville High School in Illinois. David earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wheaton College in Illinois in 1980, a Master’s degree in Education from Plymouth State University and completed advanced studies toward a doctorate in Education from the University of Maine.

Elisabeth (Beth) Sturdevant earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology at Wheaton College in Illinois. She also studied literature and writing at the University of Southern Maine and St. Joseph’s College before she taught English at Fryeburg Academy. She has served in other capacities at Fryeburg Academy over the years. She has coached track and cross country, served as the yearbook advisor, served as the Director of Alumni and Public Relations, and served as a dorm parent. When her youngest child was in high school, she went back to college to the University of New England and earned her degree in nursing. She has worked as a Registered Nurse at Mary Hitchcock (Dartmouth) Hospital, and most recently as a family practice nurse at Saco River Medical Group in Conway, New Hampshire. David and Beth have three children: Jonathan (31), Amy (29), and Daniel (27).

The selection of the Head of School is one of the greatest responsibilities of trusteeship, and all of us in the Lincoln Academy family can be proud not only that David has accepted the appointment, but also that the scope of the search was so extensive and the qualities of the interested candidates so outstanding. We are delighted with the outcome and look forward to welcoming David and Beth to the Academy and community. We are also confident that each of you will, in your own way, extend a warm welcome to our new Head of School and his family.

I would like to especially thank my fellow members of the Search Committee: Maggie Atwood, Laurie Bouchard, Lisa Masters, Sarah Maurer, Karen Moran and Chrissy Wajer, who devoted countless hours and great care to the search process to ensure its successful outcome. Thanks to the dedication of so many, and their participation in the search process, Lincoln Academy is poised for a bold and bright future.

Sincerely,

Todd L. Savage, President,

Board of Trustees
