Every May, the “best of the best” Maine high school singers and instrumentalists come together for a weekend at either UMO or USM for the Maine Music Educators’ All State Festival. The students audition in the fall and if their scores are high enough, they are selected to participate in the Band, Orchestra, Mixed Choir, or Treble Choir. Much of their preparation happens on campus with Ms. Matta and Ms. Preston during the regular band and choir rehearsals, however, most of the All Staters take private lessons outside of school.
Abe Steinberger, (who studies oboe with Michael Albert in addition to taking band in school) was a high scorer, giving him the opportunity to choose between Band and Orchestra. He will take on the challenge of playing in the orchestra where there’s usually only one player per part. Since Lincoln Academy doesn’t have an orchestra program, both violinists Helen Newell and Mena Han-Lalime worked on their music with their private teachers, Carol Preston and Lydia Forbes. All but three of the singers who qualified for All State Choir study with Ms. Preston outside of school.
Congratulations to all of the musicians!
