Gold-award winning LA Wind Ensemble rehearsing in the Poe Theater.
On Wednesday, March 25 the Lincoln Academy Wind Ensemble received a gold rating in the Maine Band Director Association’s Concert Band Festival at Scarborough High School.
Students performed three prepared pieces for a panel of adjudicators. After the band’s performance, one of the three judges worked with the band, providing feedback for continued growth. In addition to the prepared music, the musicians and their director, Liz Matta, were given a piece to sight-read. The group was given two minutes to look over the music, which they were seeing for the first time. Ms. Matta then had another two minutes to talk through the piece with the students before they had to play it as a group for a score.
Prepared music for this performance included: “Galop” by Dmitri Shostakovich, transcribed for band by Donald Hunsberger, “Down a Country Lane” by Aaron Copeland, transcribed for band by Merlin Patterson and “Shepherd’s Hey” by Percy Aldridge Grainger, edited by Larry Clark.
“This festival was an opportunity to perform in a beautiful auditorium for three well known and respected music educators,” said Liz Matta. “The students played very well under pressure and in a new to us space. Their professionalism and maturity came through and was rewarded. I am looking forward to getting back to rehearsal so we can incorporate the feedback we received.”
