On Friday, April 7, the Lincoln Academy jazz bands will perform at the 11th annual Jazz Night and Dessert Auction in the Lincoln Academy Dining Commons. The auction preview will open at 7:00 pm, and music will start at 7:30. Every year, the Jazz Night and Dessert Auction showcases LA’s jazz musicians and helps raise funds to support the music program. Jazz fans and music lovers are invited to enjoy great music and bid on delicious desserts.
The performers this year include the Lincoln Academy Jazz Big Band, the Four O’Clock Jazz Combo and the Five O’Clock Jazz Combo. The Big Band is made up of students of all ages and abilities. The two smaller combo groups feature students with slightly more jazz experience. The combos also focus more on jazz improvisation, which requires students to compose on the spot and create melodies off the top of their head. All of the groups rehearse every Thursday afternoon, with the combos appropriately meeting at four and five o’clock.
Desserts to be auctioned are created and donated by area bakers, students, and parents affiliated with LA’s music program. There is no entry fee for the concert but “we encourage jazz fans to bid early and often, and promise bragging rights for the dessert that sells for the highest price,” said Lincoln Academy music teacher and band director Liz Matta. “This is one of our important fundraisers to support the band trip to New York City, and we count on our loyal fans to help out.”
Proceeds of this year’s Jazz Night and Dessert Auction will used to for the LA Band Festival Tour in New York City, a bi-annual trip planned for March of 2018.
