On Sunday, April 30 at 6 pm, the Lincoln Academy Bands will hold their traditional spring band concert at the Damariscotta Baptist Church. The concert will feature all the instrumental groups at Lincoln Academy: Concert Band, Wind Ensemble and the Combined band which will feature more than 70 student musicians.
Liz Matta is a music teacher and band director at Lincoln Academy as well as the Department Chair for the Visual and Performing Art department. She described the concert this way: “the Spring Band Concert is always special because it’s our last official chance to celebrate our graduating seniors. We have 10 seniors who have done a wonderful job as role models for the other 60 students in the bands.
“Musically, this concert will feature Johan De Meij’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ from his Symphony no. 1. This is not music from the recent movie; De Meij’s piece was written between 1984 and 1987 after he read the trilogy by J.R.R. Tolkien. The themes and melodies are based solely on his interpretation of the book. I had the wonderful opportunity to meet and work with Johan De Meij last summer, which inspired me to do this piece with Wind Ensemble this year.”
As always, the public is welcome to attend the Spring Band Concert. Admission is by donation, and all funds raised will support the spring 2018 band trip to the World Strides Heritage Festival in New York City.
