Strings at Lincoln Home

The Lincoln Academy Strings Orchestra performed at the Lincoln Home on April 26. The group is conducted by Carol Preston (far left), who also joins the group to play violin on certain songs.

Lincoln Academy’s String Orchestra performed on April 26 for residents at Lincoln Home in Newcastle. Led by Carol Preston, the group played a varied program that included classical music by Handel, Brahms, and Mozart. For variety, they also performed a few tunes from the popular vein including ragtime, calypso, and jazz, which induced toe tapping among audience members.

The ensemble has been performing both with and without a conductor. Preston says, “Sometimes I play with them; sometimes I conduct. A group this size is pushing the limits in performing without a conductor. But the students have easily adapted, which is impressive.” They rehearse Mondays after school.

The String Orchestra will perform next in the Spring Concert with the Lincoln Academy choirs on May 20, 7:00 p.m., St. Patrick’s Church, Newcastle. They will perform by themselves, as well accompany singers on three songs.
