On Sunday, April 29, 2018 the Central Lincoln County YMCA celebrated its grand re-opening after years of hard work and dedication by community members, donors, YMCA staff, and the Board of Directors to renovate and add facilities to the Y building.

Junior Schuyler Farrell is one of two Lincoln Academy students (along with junior Nolen Michael) who serve on the Board of Directors at the Y. Schuyler was awarded the Youth Development Award for her dedication and extensive involvement in serving the community. At the presentation of the award, Program and Outreach Coordinator Karen-Ann Hagar shared just some of Schuyler’s work at the Y:

“At the beginning of this school year, Sky was voted into her role by her peers as the Y Leaders Club Chair. Since then, she has volunteered well over 100 hours of community service. Schuyler mentors many Y kids during activities such as Y parents nights out, breakfast with Santa, Y basketball tournaments, and the teen dances. In addition, Schuyler facilitates the weekly high school and middle school Y Leaders Club meetings. She also supports several community education nights put on by the Lincoln Health Coulombe Center for Health improvements, Healthy Lincoln County, and other groups such as the Lincoln County Mentoring Network that educates building resilience in our local youth. She has done this by coordinating herself and her peers by providing childcare for parents during these events. Sky is actively involved in several other community initiatives, the fill-the-bus food drives addressing food insecurities, Healthy Lincoln County ‘Sticker Shock’ that educates on laws of purchasing alcohol for underage consumers, Rotary-YMCA roadside clean-ups, and the YMCA Community Giving tree for families in financial need at Christmas.”

In addition to Schuyler, many other LA students work and volunteer with the CLC YMCA as Y Teen Leaders, summer camp counselors, youth sports coaches, participants in Y Arts, and more. Many of these students were present at Sunday’s Grand Re-Opening.

“Lincoln Academy and the CLC YMCA are natural partners in youth leadership programs in this community,” said Jake Abbott, Dean of Students at Lincoln Academy, who also serves as a CLC YMCA Board Member. “Recognizing Schuyer’s volunteerism at the Y was a perfect way to celebrate this partnership.”
