In a historic feat, the Class of 2018 has won Lincoln Academy’s inter-class rivalry known as the Faculty Shield competition for the third year in a row. During this competition students earn points for their class in various ways, from answering trivia questions in assembly, to participating in clubs and community service projects, to all-out rivalries during Homecoming and Winter Carnival.
Although seniors tend to have an advantage due to age and experience, this year’s senior class won the competition not only this year, but also during both their sophomore and junior year, making their victory a historic feat.
Assistant Athletic Director Phil Page, who is the official record keeper of the Faculty Shield Competition as well as a senior class advisor, confirms that only one class in LA history–the Class of 1982–won the competition all four years, and only two classes–1969 and 2010–previously won it for three years running.
“It is very rare for a class to win the Faculty Shield two years, much less three years in a row,” said LA French teacher Alison Welch, who serves as Team Leader for the senior class. “The Class of 2018 has been the class to beat since their freshman year when they narrowly missed winning it. 2018 has had many student leaders each year. They have lead by example, making continuous and positive contributions in everything they have taken on. As the Team Leader, I could not be more proud of a group of students.”
Class of 2018 President Levi McAtee called the seniors “unmatched, unrivaled, undefeated,” and continued, “the Class of 2018 has been unstoppable in the Faculty Shield Competition. Perhaps it was the guidance of Mr. Page, the most seasoned Eagle to ever walk the earth, or perhaps it was our unprecedented ferocity, or perhaps it was simply that nobody every taught us how to lose. Whatever the reason, we are proud to stand with the greatest classes in Lincoln Academy history.”
