Lincoln Academy is pleased to announce that Jeff Burroughs, Assistant Headmaster for Academics at St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont, has been appointed to be Lincoln Academy’s 44th Head of School. He will begin his tenure on July 1, 2019.
St. Johnsbury, a ninth-grade through postgraduate town academy of 970 students, shares the town academy structural and funding model with Lincoln Academy. Not quite twice the size of Lincoln, St. Johnsbury has a boarding program with about 250 domestic and residential students. As Associate Headmaster for Academics, Mr. Burroughs is responsible for all aspects of teaching and learning, and is familiar with the school model that combines a day and boarding program on a single campus.
An engineer by training, Mr. Burroughs worked for seven years as an IBM program manager before beginning his tenure at St. Johnsbury Academy. Preceding IBM, he spent a number of years at the Hyde School in Bath, where Mr. Burroughs had a number of roles, including math teacher, Director of Admission, and Assistant Headmaster.
Mr. Burroughs will relocate to Newcastle with his wife, Melissa, also an educator, in June of 2019. The couple has three children: Jeb, 22, is a senior at Chapman University in California; Andrew, 19, is a junior at University of King’s College in Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Eliza, 18, also attends the University of King’s College.
Lincoln Academy Interim Head of School Nancy Starmer made the announcement to LA faculty on Thursday, November 1 by reading a statement from Board Chair Judi Hilton ‘91, who said, “with his deep appreciation for the town academy model, a leadership style that can be described as collaborative and approachable, and his emphasis on the importance of building relationships within the school and with the communities we serve, Jeff promises to both appreciate LA’s proud past and lead the school in moving forward together. We are honored and excited that he will be joining us.”
“I am thrilled and deeply honored to be selected to lead Lincoln Academy as its next Head of School,” Jeff Burroughs wrote in a statement. “I was so impressed with the students, teachers, staff and community members that I met in the search process and am excited to help lead LA into the next chapter of its history. I believe deeply in the power and purpose of the town academy educational model, and I look forward to bringing my professional experience to serve this great school and community.”
The process of selecting a new Lincoln Academy Head of School began in the spring of 2018. Since then search firm Educational Directions has worked closely with a committee made up of trustees, faculty members, and community members to screen and select from what Hilton calls a “deep pool” of candidates.
“The process was challenging, because we had many qualified candidates who could have done the job well, but Jeff is the right person at the right time for Lincoln Academy,” she said.
“By hiring Jeff more than six months before he takes the reigns we hope to ensure the smoothest possible leadership transition,” Hilton continued. “He will have a chance to work with Nancy, the Board, and members of the faculty during visits to campus this winter and spring. All of us who got to know Jeff through the search process have every confidence in his ability to lead Lincoln Academy in the coming years.”
