Lincoln Academy’s library is a busy place. On any given day many LA students spend time in the library doing research for classes, working on projects, and reading. Many students eat lunch and spend study hall in the library, and there are usually board games and craft projects underway. In addition to librarians Cathi Howell and Jennifer Betts, projects and programs in the library are led by a group of students known as the Library Team. These students support the LA librarians in selecting books and organizing library programs.
This year the Library Team is working on three community service projects, all of which are focused on literacy. The first project is maintaining LA’s Little Free Library, located outside the school gym. In 2017 (when this year’s juniors were in ninth grade) students designed and built this tiny structure with the help of Design, Engineering, and Technology teacher Shawn St. Cyr. Since then students have maintained and stocked the Little Free Library with books that are donated or purchased from the Skidompha Secondhand Bookshop.
The second project involved raising funds to purchase books for LA’s Special Education classrooms. The Library Team raffled a custom holiday book basket that students filled with books, a gift card to Sherman’s Maine Coast Bookshop, holiday gift items, and candy. Special education teachers selected books they wanted to purchase, and the Library Team made the purchases with funds from the raffle.
Just this month Library Team members participated in the annual Community Read Aloud, which is celebrated each year around Dr. Seuss’s birthday in early March. This year twelve members of the Library Team traveled to Great Salt Bay Community School on March 1, where they read to students in first through fourth grades. Library Team members read in groups, often sharing a book that was a personal favorite from their own childhood reading.
“We are so fortunate to have an amazing group of students participating on the Library Team this year,” said Cathi Howell. “We have 20 students involved this year, ranging from freshmen to seniors and including one residential student. They are creative, enthusiastic, caring, civic minded, and super fun to work with!” The 2018-19 Library Leadership Team is made up of juniors Natashah Corlis-Brannan, Anna Drake, and Ben McManus.
The next event on deck for the library team is hosting the Third Annual AOS 93 Battle of the Books on May 3. Every year students from AOS 93 middle schools come to the LA campus to participate in a day of book trivia with LA librarians and Library Team members. This year, teams from each of the AOS 93 schools will compete in a trivia challenge based on the following books: Wishtree by Katherine Applegate; Ghost by Jason Reynolds; The Wild Robot by Peter Brown, and Lost Trail: Nine Days Alone in the Wilderness by Donn Fendler.
Juniors Ben McManus and Anna Drake have been participating in Library Team since ninth grade and are active members of the Leadership Team. “Library Team has been a great opportunity to give back to the community and meet individuals who love reading and the library as much as we do,” said Drake.
