On Friday, May 17th, the Lincoln Academy Civil Rights Team traveled to The Augusta Civic Center to attend the annual statewide Civil Rights Team conference. During the conference, several Maine Civil Rights Team’s shared their successes this year helping their schools think and talk about race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, gender identity, and disabilities. Additionally, two holocaust survivors, Edith Pagelson and Charles Rotmil, spoke about their harrowing childhood experiences in Nazi controlled Europe during World Word II.  Starting with Hitler’s rise to power in the 1930s, the survivors spoke about the governments attitudes progressing from, in the beginning, prejudiced attitudes to discrimination, violence, and then genocide.  It was a great conference, the team looks forward to attending and possibly presenting next year.
