“I wanted to experience Thanksgiving with a family here because I like to make a lot of friends and practice my English and enjoy Thanksgiving,” said Shuyu Pang, a 2019 Lincoln Academy graduate from TianJin, China. “In China we don’t have Thanksgiving and we don’t know what people do to celebrate it.”

Last year, more than 40 international students from Lincoln Academy enjoyed Thanksgiving dinner with a local family and we are excited to continue this tradition.  Since the LA dormitories will remain open during Thanksgiving vacation, the school is seeking host families for the Thanksgiving meal itself; no overnight accommodation is necessary.

Thanksgiving hosts pick-up and return students to the dormitories on Thanksgiving day.  Students are typically grouped in pairs, though you can request a larger number and even specific students.  Lincoln Academy Vacation Program Coordinator Sarah Kennedy says, “This is a great opportunity to share your hospitality and culture with visiting students from all over the world.  We are working to increase the cultural immersion opportunities available to international students studying at LA and depend on our wonderful community volunteers to make this happen.”

Linda Shaffer lives in Bristol with her family and has really enjoyed hosting students over the years,   “It is right up there with the best things we have done as a family.  We’ve learned about far off lands, traditions and foods quite different from our own here in Maine.  We’ve gained an appreciation of what a challenge it must be to come here from a non-English speaking country and navigate life in the US and studies at LA.  And now we know how to make sushi and egg fried rice!”
