Students reading from Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” Speech at the 2019 MLK Day Assembly. This year’s open assembly will take place on Friday, January 17 at 7:50 am.
On Friday, January 17, Lincoln Academy will host an open Community Meeting in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend. The public is invited to attend assembly at 7:50 am in the LA gym, and join students and staff as LA kicks off a weekend of activities celebrating diversity and service. This year’s theme is “the time is always right to do what is right.”
The community meeting will feature keynote speaker Ben Chin. Chin is the Deputy Director of Maine People’s Alliance, where he has worked on grassroots social change and immigrant rights since 2005. He has helped elect dozens of candidates to office, and is a former candidate for mayor of Lewiston. Chin published Maine’s first racial justice policy guide, and a white paper outlining a plan for universal childcare, home care, and paid family and medical leave. He co-hosts the Beacon Podcast with Mike Tipping, and recently received the Frederick Douglass 200 Award for his contributions to racial justice.
The remainder of the holiday weekend will feature events organized by the People United Against Racism. These include film presentations, an anti-racism vigil, an interfaith service at Second Congregational Church, and a Day of Service on Monday, January 20. A complete weekend schedule is available on the Lincoln Academy website at www.lincolnacademy.org.
In addition to Chin’s speech, Friday’s assembly at LA will feature student presentations and a musical performance. No RSVP is necessary. Chairs will be set up in the gym for visitors, who are invited to park in the lot across from the LA gym.
