Andrea Gutierrez ’20
Ceramics, Mr. Mess
ARTIST STATEMENT
My name is Andrea Gutierrez and I have grown up half in Newcastle, Maine, and half in St. Croix, USVI. This unique living situation has been invaluable to the culmination of the experiences that make me who I am. I would say my work is loosely based on some of the things I have seen in both places; my work is largely in cool tones since I have always felt drawn to the ocean, and have been sailing and swimming for a big chunk of my life. Since most of my work is thrown on the wheel it has been difficult for me to continue making things, and quarantine has forced me to alter the way I interact with the clay. Also, I think the feelings I am trying to invoke from those who view my art would be similar to those felt underwater; serenity and calm.

Lovely pieces …. not so utilitarian as you let on. So beautiful . Enjoyed your self-intro and your little video remarks. I hope you find a way back to the wheel… You have a flair for it, it seems. Congratulations on the approaching graduation. I hope your plans include more ceramic art study. Best wishes!
Andrea, I’ve loved your ceramic work ever since Ms Sawyer taunted me with the beautiful mug you gave her. These are even more gorgeous. Lovely, lovely work.
Beautiful work! I love the texturing on the Tree cup, I wish I could touch it through my screen! Congrats on embracing the challenges of these crazy times and branching out with your art.
Congratulations Andrea on your art show and graduation! It has been rewarding to see how your median has evolved so quickly., (and I have benefited handsomely from the utilitarian pieces I use everyday :)-). Your hard work has really paid off. I love that you are inspired by both of your homes. It reflects your great awareness and thoughtfulness.
Love,
Dad
Lovely work. I really liked the mountain piece, and the bark feel of the tree piece.
Outstanding work, very detailed it must have taken a lot of time and patience. Great job!!
The textures add so much interest. What a diverse yet cohesive body of work. Fantastic!
