Emily Manning ’21

Ceramics, Mr. Mess

ARTIST STATEMENT
Hello! I’m Emily Manning, I’m a junior here at Lincoln Academy. I was originally from Frankfort, Maine and moved to Nobleboro in 2009. We moved in spite of my father getting a job with his family company. With these tiles I’ve created I was inspired by the four seasons and what they look like in my head and the symbolism behind them. I think my favorite is either spring or summer. My spring tile is inspired by music with the ukulele hand-built as the new fresh air comes in, it feels like music is in the air to me! I grew up around a family who loved music and started myself in on violin. And the summer tile. This one was inspired by all the cool creatures you would see by the ocean. The reason why I decided to do something with the ocean was that other than home, it’s my favorite place to be. When creating these tiles, I had a hard time pre-planning them. I usually jump right in and go with what my gut tells me. I’ve honestly never realized how much of an impact expressing what’s in my head has had since I signed up for Ceramics as a junior. I would like to give a huge thank you to Mr. Mess for being so patient with me and for keeping me going throughout the year. He has taught me to be bold and stand out and be myself and that was truly something that changed me. With my work, I hope people can see close to or the same image that I have in my head while creating these pieces. Thank you, and I hope you enjoy these as much as I do.
