Erika Mathieson ’20
Ceramics, Mr. Mess
ARTIST STATEMENT
Hello friends! My name is Erika Mathieson and I have grown up in Round Pond, Maine. One of my favorite things about my hometown is the strong sense of community. I have grown up on the coast and in the woods – that fact alone has greatly impacted my artwork. Many of my pieces include flowers, vines, and overall a very organic feel. I find that color-wise I am drawn to all shades of blue. Something in that always reminds me of the ocean which was such a large part of my childhood. I enjoy both hand building and throwing on the wheel. I will sometimes go into a project with a plan but I often find myself just going with the flow! This is probably one of my favorite things in life. I find that when I “go with the flow” – this is when I come out with my favorite pieces. My favorite thing about ceramics is how I want to incorporate it into art therapy. Clay has taught me to work with my hands and how to help me focus my energy into my artwork. Ultimately, ceramics have led me to what I want to do in life. I will be attending Wheaton College next fall to pursue a career in art therapy. I want to share the same experience I have had with ceramics. I want to help others heal through their artwork. When people see my artwork I want them to feel the same happiness that went into making the piece.
