ARTIST STATEMENT
Ceramics was a tool of resurrection for me. Senior year is a time of comeuppance, but also a time for stress. Classwork, job, friends, swim, music, everything immediately seemed precarious and impossible at the start of the year–not to mention looming college deadlines and processes. But this year in ceramics, I found an outlet to centre myself, and I found time to understand the balancing act I had put myself in. Throwing for me was deeply meditative, and in my work, in both two-dimensions and three, my goal was always to immerse myself with process, and improve on my skill. Each project presented to me a new and different way of learning, of studying with my hands, and the devotion of my mind to a lumpy ball of wet clay provided me with space, creative clarity, and distraction from outside turmoil.

Sam – You are one of my last LA students. I am so happy to see you in this show. Your art confirms for me what I have long intuited about you … there is a lot going on under the surface. You have produced remarkable (and beautiful) things in this context and, I am confident, in others as well. Congratulations on reaching this point of reflection and, I hope, satisfaction. I hope you continue finding success in whatever path you follow. Best wishes always.
Sam – your art work is incredible! I am so glad to have the opportunity to see your pieces. Take care! Ms Welch
Sam, I’ve really enjoyed looking at your work. I love the ceramic work in particular, Julip is gorgeous.
Very sophisticated. Well done. The shadow/light contour study in the sketchbook piece is particularly intriguing. Keep up the good work, this is remarkable!
