Ceramics, Mr. Mess
Hello! My name is Sandra Thelander. I was born in Virginia Beach and moved to Maine when I was five. Maine is such a beautiful state filled with many interesting places to explore. A lot of my work reflects my love for the outdoors such as the tiles I have made. I love rock climbing so I decided to hand-build a simple 8-knot with rocks in the background for tile 1 and a climbing carabiner for tile 2. Another piece that reflects my love for the outdoors is my platter “Foggy Mountain.” My intention for the piece was to have a green mountain. The platter came out of the glaze fire with a transparent black color which I came to love. That’s what I love about ceramics. You start a piece with a vision of the final product but in the end it can come out looking more beautiful and interesting than any of your intentions. All my pieces are either hand-built or thrown on the wheel. Throwing was definitely not my strongest skill, most of my pieces collapsed on the wheel or the edges would curl in, but those turned out to be my favorite pieces. I knew I would never be able to throw the perfect cup or bowl but I don’t think having a perfect pot would fit me. All my pieces have some sort of mess up but that’s what makes them what they are. I am grateful for my year in the ceramics studio where I was free to laugh, explore, and create.
