Residential Life Update – August 23, 2020

2020-08-30T21:37:18-04:00August 23, 2020|

Residential students have really enjoyed a full sampling of Maine summer activities this week! Highlights include a sailing trip, lighthouse visit, homemade ice cream, games, a cookout, outdoor movie, and we even had a special outing to beautiful Lake Amaberssacook.  We have also started a new weekly tradition named Firepit Friday.  Friday evenings our entire residential community comes together around an outdoor campfire to talk about their week, enjoy the outside, play games and be social.  This will continue into the fall as the weather permits.

We now have eight students who have completed their two-week quarantine and moved into dorm rooms in anticipation of the start of the school year.  Another five are starting their quarantine and we have yet another group with plans for a later arrival in mid-September.  We anticipate that we will continue to welcome a selection of new students to Lincoln Academy over the course of the fall months and we are excited to see this happen.

Faculty workshops begin this week and student orientation will start on August 31.  Full details on LA’s hybrid schedule for the start of the school year can be found in the link below.  All of the residential students, including 3 dorm family freshmen will be following the “Group 2” schedule with in-person classes on Tuesday and Friday.  Dorm staff will supervise the in-dorm learning days on Monday and Thursday making sure to provide a structure to the day that includes both assigned learning time, academic support as needed, and chances to get some exercise and get off campus as appropriate.   Wednesday will be a full day of video-meeting classes.  See the schedule details here:

It’s a pleasure to have students back with us for the school year and as bittersweet as it can be to wrap up summer vacation, we have some exciting programs and activities planned for the fall.  As always, please don’t hesitate to be in touch with any questions about your student’s experience at LA.

Best regards,

Jake Abbott

Student Health Insurance Update

United Healthcare has sent the following updates and links related to Covid-19 and your student’s insurance coverage.  Please review with your family and be in touch with any questions.

Covid-19 Treatment

  • Covered under the plan and treated as “any other sickness” – no separate limits, co-pays, etc.

Covid-19 Testing

  • Symptomatic – Yes.  Needs to be ordered by a physician (or appropriately licensed health care professional) and administered by a qualified provider. Will follow United Healthcare guidelines.
    • With the extensive list of potential symptoms (fever, cough, fatigue, etc.) this could result in a significant number of symptomatic tests.
    • A student that gets tested given “contact tracing” (they have been in contact with someone who has tested positive)  would also be covered.
    • UnitedHealthcare will cover medically necessary testing for the purpose of diagnosis or treatment of an individual member.  In such cases, the tests must be ordered by a physician or appropriately licensed health care professional and also be FDA sanctioned, authorized or state approved.
  • Asymptomatic/”Screening” – Basically, No.
    • Testing for purposes of Return to Work or School (including for purposes of participation in sports) is generally considered surveillance testing  and would not be covered. Our coverage policy aligns with recently released guidance from the Department of Health and Human Services distinguishing tests that are primarily intended for individualized diagnosis and treatment from other tests, such as those used to screen for general workplace health or broad public health surveillance.

Parental communication

  • We are attaching a suggested parent communication that addresses COVID-19.  Obviously this is merely intended as an initial template should it be helpful.

As you know, the situation is constantly evolving.  Below please find links provided by United Healthcare Student Resources (guidelines, FAQ’s, etc.)  These links are updated on a frequent basis in order to address changing dynamics and questions as they arise.  While you can expect us to continue to update you, keeping these links handy should prove helpful as you develop your plans. – “Welcome page” – detailed information (for providers) concerning testing, treatment, coding and reimbursement.
