Residential Life Update – October 12, 2020

2020-10-12T09:37:24-04:00October 12, 2020|

This long weekend celebrates Indigenous Peoples Day in Maine and it is the first 4-day break for students this school year.  While staff were in professional development meetings on Friday, Residential Students had the opportunity to visit a farm and weave their way through an extensive corn maze. Other recent seasonal activities include an outing to the scenic village of Camden to view the fall foliage, hikes, horseback riding, and even a late-season swim in Damariscotta Lake.  Students also spent some free time this weekend volunteering to make purple ribbons to distribute to community members to wear to raise awareness during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Please make your calendar for LA’s new Virtual Open House this Wednesday, Oct 14 from 6:30-8pm EST.  Families will have the opportunity to follow a mini version of their student’s schedule and meet each teacher.  This event will be completely virtual, and “meetings” will take place via Google Meet.  More details and links for Google Meets will be sent to you via email on Tuesday.  If you are unable to attend, we encourage you to reach out to your student’s teachers directly to arrange a time to discuss any questions or concerns you have about your student’s academic progress at LA.  Click Here for LA Faculty and Staff Directory.

Best regards,

Jake Abbott

Fall Athletics Update

Thursday/Friday Club Periods

Students have had the opportunity to explore the wide range of extracurricular clubs Lincoln Academy offers over the last few weeks. Club attendance lists are now fixed for the rest of the trimester. Freshmen who are not engaged in clubs will be placed in structured study halls, specifically for freshmen. These structured study halls provide extra support as freshmen transition to high school in this unusual school year. Upperclassmen will also have study halls and academic support during this extracurricular time.

Senior Photos Due November 13

Yes, there will be a 2021 Lincoln Academy yearbook!

Though it may look different than in past years, we do want to remember this historic school year through a yearbook. As always, seniors have the option of submitting a senior photo or using their school photo take by LifeTouch. They should also submit a baby photo if possible.

Senior photos and baby photos are due to the yearbook staff on or before Friday, November 20, before Thanksgiving vacation. These photos can be submitted by emailing digital files to or uploading them directly to the yearbook portal, which will open next week.

Join the LA Debate Team

The LA Debate Team is gearing up for the 2020-2021 season. We have a mock tournament and two scrimmages–in both Speech and Debate– to start the year before regular tournaments begin, so if you’d like to try a Debate Tournament with no pressure, these are a great place to start! If you are interested in issues of public policy, or in the ethical and philosophical discussion of issues, or if you have an interest in acting or any of the performing arts, the Debate Team could be a great fit for you. Tournaments are starting later than usual this year, so you have plenty of time. It isn’t necessary to commit to taking part in every tournament either; members of sports teams can still be on the Debate Team and join in when your sports season is over.

Part of the fun of being on the Debate Team is the competition. You get to know students from other schools and learn how to sharpen not only your research, writing, and speaking skills, but also your listening skills. Our team won the State Championships in 2019 and placed second in the state in 2020 with a much smaller team. In 2020, senior Riley Stevenson was State Champion in Lincoln Douglas Debate and Scotty Petersen placed second, so anyone who has an interest would have the benefit of having state champion debaters help and support them.

If you think this sounds like something you would enjoy, come join us! We meet Thursday and Friday in Ms. Halm’s room, 106. And if you know of someone you think would excel at speech or debate, and would enjoy it, send them along too!
