Winter Athletics Update

December 15, 2020

Like many things in 2020, and moving into 2021, there are many unknowns about the winter sports season in Maine. Here are the things we do know.

  • Indoor track: Lincoln Academy will not have a 2020-21 indoor track season. We do not have access to facilities for competition, as local colleges will not open their tracks to high school competition.
Swim: Lincoln Academy will not have a 2020-21 swim season, as we have been unable to secure a facility for either practice or competition.
Wrestling is classified as a “red” sport by the MPA, like football was in the fall. The Maine wrestling season is currently on hold until Mid-February. There will not be any LA wrestling team formed at this time, even for organizational purposes.
Cheer is classified as a “yellow” sport by the MPA. We are currently organizing team sign-ups and will begin with coach directed “zoom” training sessions while we await the completion of our gym ventilation (scheduled to be complete on January 11th) and we seek clarification on MPA recommendations.
Basketball: Like cheer, basketball is also classified as a “yellow” sport by the MPA. We are currently organizing team sign-ups and will begin with coach directed “zoom” training sessions while we await the completion of our gym ventilation and we seek clarification on MPA recommendations.

As we have tried to do all along in these last 10 months, our approach to winter sports will be cautious, intentional, and balance the needs of community groups and teams with those of the greatest portion of our community as possible. Our intention is to keep students in school safely for as many days as we can in our Hybrid model. We also want to make sure that LA faculty and staff can work in a community that is operating as safely and securely as possible.

As we saw in the fall in some southern counties, sports and extracurricular activities are suspended if that county moves from “green” to “yellow” as designated by the Maine DOE. Activities may resume once the county has been moved back to green. This may impact our winter sports season. As long as Lincoln County remains green, individual positive cases in our community may or may not impact sports and extracurricular programming depending on a wide range of variables.

We will update the LA community about sports as we learn more about case counts and access to facilities in the coming weeks.

Thank you for your continued support as we navigate these unprecedented times.

Sincerely

Jeffrey S. Burroughs
