Residential Life Update – January 10, 2021

2021-01-10T21:48:40-05:00January 10, 2021|

We are back!  Starting this week, the LA community will be coming together again for hybrid learning.  The campus has been buzzing with construction over the break and the majority of new ventilation projects have now been completed.  This work will ensure that we have a high volume of circulating air throughout campus buildings even when it is too cold outside to have windows open.

These weeks of remote learning have been successful, but I believe everyone is ready to get back to in-person learning.  A big part of being in a school community is the day-to-day interactions with teachers and peers.  So much is learned and gained from being together, talking, sharing, and expressing – we have missed this and are so very fortunate to be able to restart with in-person classes tomorrow morning.

On the health care side of things, vaccinations are moving forward.  Health care workers and those at most risk have already begun mass vaccinations in our area.  Educators are in the second tier of vaccinations in Maine, so we expect the adults in our school community will have an opportunity to be vaccinated in the coming months – further increasing the safety of our campus and the greater community.

A reminder that we now have two weeks until the mid-point of trimester two.  Please check-in with your student to review academic performance, address concerns, and ask questions as we reach the half-way point in the school year.

February vacation is just five weeks away, February 13-21.  We will be using the same travel restrictions during this vacation, the dorms will remain open, and we will have programming throughout.  If your child has specific needs or concerns about travel, please contact me directly.

Lastly, as we close out the week I am reflecting on the national political news here in the US.  Our peaceful pocket of New England is far from Washington, DC and in many ways we feel insulated from the unrest there.  Please know that the LA community, its teachers, and support staff strive to create an open, safe, and engaging environment where we can openly talk together about the important issues of local, national, and global news.  This has been an unprecedented time in US history and as we watch current events unfold on our screens we will be discussing the situation and what we can learn together.  It is important for our students to ask questions, express emotions, and share thoughts in a safe way where everyone’s voice can be heard.  If you have any immediate questions or concerns about this, please contact me directly at

Best regards,

Jake Abbott
