Students in Lincoln Academy’s IDEAL (Innovatively Designed Education for All Learners) Program have built several bat houses for the Twin Villages Foodbank Farm, which is located at Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust. Students are working in the ATEC building in the afternoons to complete the project.
“The Twin Village farmers wanted bat houses to help reduce the mosquito population and make working in their fields more tolerable,” said IDEAL teacher Janna Civittolo. “Bat houses also help to stimulate the ever-decreasing bat populations.”
Since bats are particular about their housing, the IDEAL students had to do some research to determine which house design would best suit the bats here in Maine. Students have now completed have built two houses that will be installed on the Coastal Rivers property in mid-May.
