Winter Carnival is in full swing and even without enough snow for snow sculptures there is no lack of spirit on campus for dress up days, dodgeball, and quiz bowl.
As the winter sports season comes to a close, we have seen more demonstrations of excellence among our athletes. Senior swimmer Arden Carleton is the KVAC champ in the 100 butterfly, and sophomore wrestler Jayden Lafreneye is the Class B Southern Regional champ in the 145 pound weight class. Swimmers and wrestlers who qualified will go on to their state championships this weekend, and the boys and girls basketball teams start their playoff runs this week, with the boys at Yarmouth tonight and the Girls hosting Lake Region at home on Wednesday.
Continuing the good news from our Bath Tech students, we learned that two Lincoln Academy students will compete in the Maine SkillsUSA competition in early March. Alana Brown will compete in wedding cake decorating, and Sullivan Anderson will compete in electrical construction wiring. This is a big honor, and winners of this statewide competition can go on to compete at the national SkillsUSA competition.
In closing, I wanted to offer a few comments on the recent negative use of social media. Over the last week we have fielded a significant number of emails drawing our attention to several anonymous “Lincoln Academy” affiliated Instagram accounts that appear to be created to mock and bully members of the LA community. The use of social media in destructive and demeaning ways has no place in our school culture. I am very grateful to the students who brought these accounts to our attention, as well as who helped to ensure these accounts were taken down. We will continue to use every means at our disposal to prevent these hurtful accounts from continuing to damage our community.
I look forward to returning to school after winter break and opening further discussion and education about appropriate and effective use of language and social media.
I hope you all find time to rest and recharge this break. Until then, happy Winter Carnival!
Be well and stay safe,
Jeffrey S. Burroughs
