Residential Life Update – May 15, 2023

End-of-Year Details

As we get closer to the end of the school year the calendar is full of events and students are busy making memories with their friends and classmates.  We’re excited for Prom this weekend, a lobster bake in Pemaquid on Memorial Day, and many other opportunities for students to celebrate this special time of year in Maine.

End-of-Year Details:  Closing the dorm and moving students out is a complex process.  Along with departure dates (seniors are expected to be out of the dorm by the end of the day on Saturday, June 3, and underclassmen the following week, on Friday, June 9) we also include the process of packing and cleaning rooms, sorting items no longer wanted, supporting shipping of items that won’t fit in suitcases, and ensuring that records, medications, and other belongings are accounted for.  Please work with your student to ensure that they understand the need to be organized and efficient as we work to complete these important tasks.

For students returning to LA next year, we offer the service of summer storage of items on campus.  Things must be boxed and well-labeled.  For anyone not returning, all personal belongings must be packed, disposed of, or shipped prior to leaving campus.  End-of-year departure plans are now due in Orah.

Graduation is Friday, June 2.  You can view a full list of end-of-year events at the link below.  Please be in touch if you are making travel plans and have any questions: https://www.lincolnacademy.org/campus-and-community/graduation-events/

Sincerely,

Career and Academic Counseling

ASVAB Test: Thursday, May 25th 11:30-2:30

The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multiple-aptitude test that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in and outside of the US military. It is administered annually to more than one million military applicants, high school, and post-secondary students.  It is a useful test for undecided students or students who want to explore multiple career options beyond high school that may or MAY NOT be related to entering the US Military. Your results will NOT be shared with US Military recruitment.  The ASVAB test will be a paper-based exam and will be administered at LA on Thursday, May 25th 11:30-2:30. Students who are interested in taking the exam should speak with their school counselor and must sign-up by 5/15. Priority will be given to seniors and juniors.

AP Exams
AP testing began this week and will continue over the next two weeks. AP Exam information is always available in the CAC office, and with AP teachers. Students should be checking with their AP teachers about AP Exam locations and times.  Testing locations will be on campus in Hall House, St. Patrick’s Church in Newcastle, and at the Second Congregational Church at the bottom of Academy Hill Road.  It will be the student’s responsibility to arrive at least 20 minutes in advance of the exam starting time.  It will be the student’s responsibility to provide their own transportation to and from exams.  This may require parents, guardians, or friends providing rides to early morning exams and bringing students home from late afternoon exams.  There will be a bus available for students with exams that start at noon at St. Patrick’s Church.  Some exams can last up to four hours.  Bring pencils, black or blue pens, approved calculators, water, snacks and your AP ID number.  *If you have testing accommodations please check with your teacher or the CAC office, your exam may be in a different location than your other classmates.*

FRESHMEN:
Bath Tech is offering a FREE summer program for rising sophomores (current ninth graders) focusing on Science, Tech, Engineering, Art, and Math. Students can take part in their choice of programming including: Automotive, Culinary/Baking, Welding, Carpentry, Graphic Design, Electricity, and Cosmetology. Transportation can be provided, please inquire. CAC recommends that students with any interest in attending Voc in the future take advantage of this opportunity. Applications have been given to freshman advisors.

SENIORS:
Complete your Application for Graduation and Scholarship!  This form was shared with seniors through email and will serve as an application for free money through Lincoln Academy endowment funds; the details that students provide will help the Awards Committee see how they may qualify for a variety of awards whether they are going to college, trade school, military, or work.

We are asking seniors to complete this form once they are confident about their post-graduation plans (i.e., know the college or trade school they plan to attend, know that they will be apprenticing or joining the workforce).  It is important that the information they provide is comprehensive and accurate. Please touch base with CAC if you have any questions or concerns.

Scholarships are updated regularly and posted in Naviance! Encourage your senior to check often. Additionally, the CAC office is running an FLB that meets weekly on Mondays to give seniors time to research and apply for scholarships. FLB’s have been shared with students, but feel free to speak with your senior about this option.

Peer Tutors
If your student is interested in becoming a Peer Tutor, please email Ms. Alicia Lemar in the CAC office at Lemar@lincolnacademy.org. This will happen during FLB and only in subjects students choose. Sign up now to join this exciting program!

In turn, if your student would benefit from the help of a peer tutor, please reach out to Ms. Alicia Lemar at: lemar@lincolnacademy.org
