A warm, wet and wild weekend!

Greeting from the sunny coast of Maine, where we are enjoying wonderful fall temperatures!  This phenomenon of dry, warm autumn days (after the first frost) is often referred to as Indian Summer, although more recently, Second Summer.  This weekend, we took full advantage of all that our Second Summer has had to offer: fireside cookout, river adventures, shopping and service.

Friday evening, the students and dorm staff enjoyed a fire in our outdoor fireplace, complete with desserts and lively activity.  It was a perfect night for it!  Saturday morning kicked off with an early morning workout stacking firewood for CHiP,  a project that Mr. Abbott has been focused on completing.  The evening provided opportunities for students to go bowling at a local entertainment center, while others chose to walk into town to see “Golda” at our local movie theater.

Sunday was no less busy, with several students departing at 6am for a day of white water rafting on the Kennebec River!  Blessed with warm temperatures and blue skies, the group of 17  students were rewarded with excellent conditions and plenty of opportunities to swim.  After a full day of traveling, teamwork, paddling, and laughing, our students were pretty exhausted, but happy!  Those that did not choose to be on the river had the opportunity to do some  shopping in Freeport, a town south of Newcastle that boasts large outlet stores, small boutiques, and the LLBean flagship store.

It’s safe to say that that Monday morning was tough on some of our dorm students!  While there are still some cases of illness, most of our students have recovered well this week and are back in the classroom.  Here in the dorm, we continue to promote hygiene and infection control, such as handwashing and masking when symptomatic.

This coming weekend, we look forward to four days off!  Pumpkinfest is our town’s showcase event, and the weekend will be full of entertainment, volunteering and spectacle.  Check out the website for a full list of events and photos that truly express the uniqueness of a Pumpkin Regatta!  Our volunteering efforts continue to be promoted, and students are being encouraged to engage as much as possible.  To recruit more volunteers, we’ve posted cumulative volunteer hours so far this trimester, and it’s been observed that a little healthy competition sure can inspire participation!

From sunny Newcastle, we wish you a bright and joyful week.

In Service to Others

Wood Stacking

Dean of Students Jake Abbott and a team of 4 students (Tokyo (Thailand), Vitor (Brasil), Alison, and Trey (local students) stacked about 4 cords of wood.  The volunteer work took place at the CHiP wood processing lot at NC Hunt in Jefferson.  The group worked for two and a half hours and this wood will be donated to local families to assist in heating costs.  To complete the project, another afternoon will be planned to stack the rest of the wood, about 5 cords.  This event will happen on Saturday, September 30 at 8:00am.  The more volunteers we have, the faster it will go!  This is a great opportunity to serve the community, enrich relationships and get a bit of exercise!

Mr. Abbott is coordinating community service opportunities for LA students. He will be putting together a monthly update of these opportunities for students to take advantage of. Want to get involved, or have a service opportunity for students? Contact him at jabbott@lincolnacademy.org.  The lastest edition of the Community Service newsletter is at this link.
