A Happy Halloween and Welcome to November!

It was a cold, dark night here in Newcastle, and the ghouls and vampires were out, roaming the streets, begging for candy. That’s just a typical American Halloween evening, and many students took the opportunity to dress up and enjoy a walk around town! Other students volunteered at a local Trunk or Treat event for children, representing Lincoln Academy well. Trunk or Treat is an event where families gather in a central location, decorate their vehicles, and allow children to walk from vehicle to vehicle, asking “Trick or Treat!”. This is particularly effective in rural areas where walking house-to-house is not possible. Our nightly study hall was canceled to allow students the chance to relax and revel in the day’s celebrations and traditions. Students returned to the dorms around 9pm, where they gathered and enjoyed a festive movie until 10pm. Check out the photos from yesterday’s school day!

The first trimester ends on November 17. Academic support is always available during Focused Learning Block (FLB) and during our evening study hall in the dormitory. Students should be in touch with their teachers if they have any questions or concerns heading into the final weeks of the trimester. They may also access peer tutoring during their FLB, and can speak to their advisors about that opportunity.

The drama department’s presentation of the Crucible finishes its run of performances on Saturday, November 4. A good number of ResLife students attended a performance last week, in support of their classmates and dorm-mate, Jackie Pelletier.

As we wrap up the fall sports season, the boys soccer team has a game on Thursday evening against Cape Elizabeth. Last Wednesday evening, the boys soccer team played spectacularly and held off their opponents in penalty kicks to win their quarterfinal game against Freeport. Our own Pablo Iglesias Martin and Marcello Endrizzi played magnificently and we look forward to this week’s match.

The joy and celebration of Wednesday evening’s soccer game quickly waned as the tragic events in Lewiston unfolded. With support from Mr. Abbott, our dorm parents and staff, we were able to develop a plan to keep our residential students supported, fed, informed and safe. To you, our families, we are grateful for your ongoing communication and trust in us as we navigated this unprecedented event.

Winter Sport Sign-Ups are available in PowerSchool. Parents who had a fall athlete must also complete this form to review the data previously submitted to make sure all information is up to date. Please see these directions for sports registration. Winter sports options are: Indoor Track, Basketball, Swimming, Wrestling, and Cheerleading.

The American Holiday of Thanksgiving is November 23 and we will have more details on activities for Thanksgiving week in our next newsletter. Remember that we are closed December 16, 2023 at 3pm – January 1, 2024 and students or families need to have plans submitted in Orah by November 18th. Approved dates for traveling are December 15, after school and December 16. The approved return date is Tuesday, January 2nd. Please mark your calendar for the upcoming school vacations in November, December, February and April.

Be well and take care,
