The Alternative Education Department at Lincoln Academy, located down Academy Hill and just off campus, supports students of all backgrounds, abilities and aspirations with their educational experience during and after high school. Our caring and dedicated teaching staff work to provide individualized programing and mentoring in a variety of ways.

The Alternative Education Program:

Started in 1991, it stands as one of the longest successfully operational alternative education programs in the state of Maine.  The philosophy of the Alternative Education Program at Lincoln Academy is to provide a positive learning environment for students for whom the traditional high school classroom is not a good fit. Our program is based on the “Empowerment Model” that is designed to help students assume primary responsibility for their own education while providing them with a caring, nurturing, and highly individualized educational experience.  The Alternative Education Program primarily serves 11th and 12th graders.

The Alternative Education Department is a part of Lincoln Academy and therefore is open every school day.  Our hours of operation are from 7:45 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Monday through Friday 7:30 am – 3:00 pm.

I grew up in New York's Hudson Valley region and moved to Maine in 2011 after short stays in Massachusetts, England and Minnesota.  I believe travel, books and experiences that challenge one's comfort are integral to the shaping of one's worldview and I take every opportunity to visit both unfamiliar and familiar places and learn as much as I can about the world and its peoples.  I enjoy talking with my students about history, culture, philosophy, and soccer and love the work I do at Lincoln Academy - in the classroom, on the athletic fields and in the dormitory.

Anna Myers : Alternative Education Instructor
Anna Myers

Ms. Myers became interested in science while exploring the rocky coast of Maine as a child. In graduate school, she studied lobsters and can can talk about them all day. As a teacher, she has worked with first-graders in Boston, fifth-graders at an outdoor school in northern California, and college students on a schooner traveling from Gloucester, Massachusetts to the Caribbean. She loves teaching in the Alternative Education Program at Lincoln Academy, where students can ask their own questions and find answers in creative ways. Both sides of her family have deep roots in the Newcastle/Damariscotta area. Her mother graduated from LA in 1962! Having traveled and lived in several states and continents, Ms. Myers feels she has come back home to one of the best places on Earth.
