The Alternative Education Department at Lincoln Academy, located down Academy Hill and just off campus, supports students of all backgrounds, abilities and aspirations with their educational experience during and after high school. Our caring and dedicated teaching staff work to provide individualized programing and mentoring in a variety of ways. We offer two programs:

The Alternative Education Program:

Started in 1991, it stands as one of the longest successfully operational alternative education programs in the state of Maine.  The philosophy of the Alternative Education Program at Lincoln Academy is to provide a positive learning environment for students for whom the traditional high school classroom is not a good fit. Our program is based on the “Empowerment Model” that is designed to help students assume primary responsibility for their own education while providing them with a caring, nurturing, and highly individualized educational experience.  The Alternative Education Program primarily serves 11th and 12th graders.

Transitions is a 9th and 10th grade Alternative Education-based program housed in the Alternative Education department. The purpose of the program is to identify and help those students who are having a difficult time transitioning to high school. Transitions provides a safe, relaxed learning environment as an alternative to the highly structured environment at Lincoln Academy.

Schedule: The Transitions program meets every afternoon.

The program consists of three components:

  • Transitions Structured Study Hall (non-credit) – keep up with all your homework
  • Alternative Education PE (.33 credits) – get up/out and move
  • Transitional Skills (.33 credits) – how to succeed at Lincoln Academy and beyond

Teague Street Learning Center Staff:

Stephany Morris: Alternative Education Department Head and Instructor
Luke Suttmeier: Alternative Education Instructor in Social Studies, Transitions Lead Teacher
Anna Myers: Alternative Education Instructor in Science.
