Welcome to Our School on the Hill!

Lincoln Academy has been educating students since 1801. During our long history, we have been counted among the top high schools in Maine.  During your visit on this website, you will soon discover the wide range of academic and extracurricular opportunities on offer, the lovely campus set in stunningly gorgeous midcoast Maine within walking distance of our award winning town of Damariscotta, the diverse population of students from around the world, and the list of prestigious universities our graduates attend. Approximately 12% of our student population of 550 are made up of international students from 17 countries.

However, what really sets us apart is the synergistic effect of combining nurturing student-centric adults; our safe, embracing community; and the plethora of options to explore and engage. The outcomes are evident–your child becomes grounded on a holistic perspective of the world and exhibits confidence and courage such that they continually challenge themselves with audacious goals to solve complex problems. Think of us as a private school with public school diversity and full boarding set in a postcard perfect coastal town.

I invite you to continue your exploration by requesting a conversation with me using this inquiry form or via email at tan@lincolnacademy.org.  I’ll be delighted to share what I love about Lincoln Academy–our community, our school, our home.

Warmest regards,
Mr Lu-Shien Tan

Lu-Shien Tan

Lu-Shien is a self-professed foodie and adores exploring cultures by sampling street food, and engaging local traditions.

He grew up in Singapore where he had an education combining rote memory learning from Singapore schools and 3 years of self-directed study at Hong Kong International School. This unique educational experience likely enabled him to enroll at Baylor University when he was 16 years old and graduate 4 years later with a Statistics and Marketing degree.

Shortly after graduation, Lu-Shien returned to Singapore to complete national service duties then began working at his father's management consulting company as a corporate trainer and business development manager.

A few years later, Lu-Shien fired himself from that job to find his own way as a yacht delivery and charter captain, fishing guide and sailing/powerboat instructor.

In 2000, Lu-Shien married Monica and moved to live in Central Texas, working various roles with CompUSA, Enterprise-Rent-A-Car and was even a realtor and boutique caterer for a while.

This broad spectrum of cross cultural and customer service experience came together when he moved his family to Penang, Malaysia to serve an American International School as their Admissions Counselor, departing 4 years later as a Director of Admissions.

In the Summer of 2018, he moved his family from San Francisco to Newcastle to serve Lincoln Academy. His wife Monica is a dorm mother at Hall House. Ian is a senior at Lincoln Academy and an accomplished bassoonist. Aria is a junior at Lincoln Academy and passionate thespian. Lu-Shien hopes that his passion to share authentic stories about our school will soon draw a wide breadth of future Lincoln Academy students to our community.

BA - Bethel University

I grew up in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis & St. Paul, in Minnesota. I graduated from Bethel University with a BA in Marketing with minors in Art History, Small Business Management, and Economics. After college, I went into retail marketing and human resources work before moving to Maine with our young family in 2004. Since then we have lived up and down the I95 corridor including a small town just south of Millinocket, blocks from the campus of the University of Maine in Orono, walking distance from LLBeans flagship store in Freeport, and most recently settling in the Mid-Coast in 2017. It is pretty incredible to work with the students and families, alumni and friends of an independent school who make it a point to be engaged and supportive of the school in so many ways. When I'm not on campus, our four children keeps us on our toes. We enjoy new experiences each and every year as well as revisiting our most favorite memories that make living in Maine such and incredible adventure.
