Residential Life Update – September 20, 2020

By |September 20, 2020|Categories: News, Resident Life Weekly|

We’ve completed our first week of hybrid learning with a mix of online and in-person classes.  While this schedule is certainly different from a typical fall trimester at LA, students are quickly adapting and getting comfortable in both their online and in-person classes.  At the end of his first Wednesday of synchronous online classes, junior Alexandr Bedarev commented, “We were on the computer all day, but I think it went pretty good so far.”  Res Life students have in-person classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays and work online the other days of the week.  Students have support from dorm staff throughout the day and gather together for meals and study breaks.  More details on the fall schedule here:

After a busy week of classes, all Res Life students took part in a community service project on Saturday in partnership with Community Housing Improvement Project (CHIP), a local organization with the mission to help neighbors stay safe, warm, and dry.  After an orientation session in LA’s Applied Technology and Engineering Center, we built insulating window frames that reduce family heating costs during the cold winter months.  It was a wonderful opportunity for students to learn new skills, collaborate, and give back to the community.

Other weekend activities included Firepit Friday, a trip to Hong Kong Market and Vietnamese takeout in Portland, movies in the dorm, and a special excursion to Monhegan Island.  We continue to have beautiful weather and students are encouraged to enjoy the outdoors.

Looking forward to week two of hybrid learning ahead.

Best regards,

Jake Abbott

By |September 13, 2020|Categories: News, Resident Life Weekly|

The official start to fall is still a week away, but the air has a certain crispness and the leaves are just starting to change color here in Mid-coast Maine.  While there is always excitement in the change of seasons, we continue to soak up all things summertime while we can - swimming, boat rides, fresh seafood, and hiking have all been enjoyed by residential students this past week.  We also had a wonderful time at Camp Kieve-Wavus last weekend challenging ourselves on the ropes course and paddling on Damariscotta Lake.   Next weekend is dedicated to service and we’re [...]

Residential Life Update – September 6, 2020

Labor Day Weekend, a special holiday weekend at the start of the school year, is a time for our residential community to come together and build strong connections with each other and the region of Mid-coast Maine.   We share a traditional lobster feast on the shore, get out on the water, and have a team-building retreat at Camp Kieve-Wavus.  It’s an opportunity for new students to join the fold and make friendships that may stay with them for their entire lives.  Returning students reconnect with their peers and welcome new friends to our community.   Lots of images from [...]

This is our 6th week of gradually welcoming Residential Life students back to campus since the dorms closed last spring.  Students and dorm families kicked off the weekend with our new summer tradition of Firepit Fridays.  This has become a weekly opportunity to gather outside, play games, share stories, and reflect on the many things we have to be grateful for in our community.   We now have 13 students from 8 countries settling into their home away from home here on campus and, after health screenings and quarantines, we hope to have several more join us during the [...]

Residential students have really enjoyed a full sampling of Maine summer activities this week! Highlights include a sailing trip, lighthouse visit, homemade ice cream, games, a cookout, outdoor movie, and we even had a special outing to beautiful Lake Amaberssacook.  We have also started a new weekly tradition named Firepit Friday.  Friday evenings our entire residential community comes together around an outdoor campfire to talk about their week, enjoy the outside, play games and be social.  This will continue into the fall as the weather permits.  We now have eight students who have completed their two-week quarantine and moved [...]
