Darling Marine Center, South Bristol — Volunteer Research Opportunities

Would you like to learn about marine ecology while getting muddy in the Damariscotta River?

This summer, the Darling Marine Center will be hosting field days for high school students to study soft-shell clams, quahogs, oysters, and their predators in the upper Damariscotta River intertidal zone. This brief program is a great way to learn more about marine ecology and marine science careers, while collecting data that will help us better understand and care for our local ecosystem!

The field days will take place throughout the summer (see below for dates) and will be based out of the Darling Marine Center located at 193 Clarks Cove Rd, Walpole, ME. If you are interested in taking part on one or all of these days, please complete this form.

Position Summary:

The Outreach Education Assistant represents the Seabird Institute (SI) to the public as a narrator aboard puffin watching cruises in Mid-Coast Maine, and as a greeter and interpreter at the Project Puffin Visitor Center in Rockland, Maine.  Outreach Education Assistants bring the story of SI’s 45-year history to children, adults, and families, and help people to understand the necessity for this applied conservation work, as well as to inspire them to become personally involved in conservation action as donors and citizen activists.  
Food and shared housing provided, located at Audubon’s Todd Wildlife Sanctuary, located at 12 Audubon Road, in Bremen, Maine. 

There is one remaining full-time seasonal positions available as detailed below: 

Start Dates: ASAP

End Date: late August  


  • Initial 1-2 week participation in seabird island field work including, but not limited to, bird counts and weather data collection, 3-hr observation stints from small unheated blinds, bird handling, measuring, banding, data entry and assisting with habitat management projects at an assigned island research site using binoculars (not provided) and spotting scopes (supplied) to aid in the collection of data as specified by the Island Supervisor;**
  • Train with Education staff to learn: Audubon and early SI history; how to identify Gulf of Maine seabirds; natural history of the Maine Coast with the goal of working independently as tour interpretive narrator;
  • Serve as interpreter, field naturalist and store-keeper aboard commercial puffin-watching tours departing from New Harbor and Boothbay Harbor to Eastern Egg Rock, offshore in Muscongus Bay;
  • Write social media posts and support weekly Seabird Island News publication.
  • Train with the Project Puffin Visitor Center Manager to learn: operation of point-of-sale system; Visitor Center interpreter and inventory management procedures;
  • Assist with operating remote wildlife cam channels which includes posting island/seabird updates; responding to comments;
  • Maintain inventory and sell books and seabird-related items aboard the commercial tours and at Project Puffin Visitor Center;
  • Promote SI’s mission, and encourage tour participants and PPVC visitors to financially support the Program;
  • Participate in Hog Island day trips; process sales on Hog Island store; 
  • Assist mainland staff with logistics, which includes driving to boat docks, bus and limo stops as needed;
  • Assist mainland-based staff with procurement of supplies, packing groceries, research supplies and mail in waterproof island transport bags; cleaning and filling water jugs for resupplying research stations, etc.;
  • Greet and guide new Seabird Institute volunteers.  Help them with shopping and packing of supplies for the remote island field camps.
  • Work with Island Research Coordinator and additional staff in early / mid-May to assist in set-up of Field Camps on offshore seabird nesting islands.  
  • Ensure shared housing facility is properly and consistently maintained and cleaned.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Must be pursuing bachelor’s degree (or already hold a degree) in Environmental Education, Environmental Studies, Biology or similar background.  
  • Previous experience in environmental education, bird-watching, and teaching public programs is required.
  • Proficient in all Microsoft Office applications.
  • Willingness and ability to camp in extreme weather, sit in small observation blinds with limited visibility for three-hour observation periods, and spend time at sea (on boats) is required.
  • Excellent communications skills with ability to write clearly.  
  • Must be able to climb over rugged terrain and lift approximately 50 lbs. 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license, as well as, personal pair of good quality binoculars. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Familiarity with spotting scopes, point-of-sale register system, camping equipment is a plus.

  • 2-person sized personal tents will be required (not furnished) for housing on the seabird islands. 
  • Wood platforms for tents on seabird islands will be provided.  Sleeping bags and ground pad will be required (not furnished).  Drinking water, food and propane for cooking are brought via boat and carried by hand to the field camps.

**Assistants will be living in primitive camping conditions.  These conditions include no running water, composting toilets, etc.  Solar panels will provide limited electricity.

Nobleboro/Jefferson Transfer Station & Maintenance Position

This is a part-time job 24-hours a week, year-round position. The work week is 

Tuesday thru Saturday 8:00 am-4:00pm. It could become full time if candidate is

Transfer Station Attendant– You will be working with other attendant as well as the Transfer Station Manager. Duties are shared between the three employees with the Manager being responsible for directing daily duties of the attendants. This position would require some manual labor. You must be able to lift at least 30 lbs.  You will be assisting citizens in proper disposal of waste materials.

Volunteer Opportunities–Lincoln County Historical Society

Community Appreciation Day Greeter

Multiple volunteers are needed at Chapman-Hall House in Damariscotta, The Old Jail Museum in Wiscasset, and the Pownalborough Court House in Dresden to greet guests at Community Appreciation Day – June 4th, 2022. Hours vary by location, but volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of one one hour shift.

Volunteers will ask visitors to sign in, hand out brochures and keepsake materials, direct guests to refreshments, etc. Volunteers will be provided with the basic information needed to answer Frequently Asked Questions. It is important that volunteers in this position are comfortable being friendly and welcoming to members of the public. Students are welcome to sign up for a volunteer shift on their own or as a team of two to three friends.

Volunteer tour guides are responsible for sharing museum interpretations with the public in approximately 50 minute tours. Shifts and hours vary by location and are only during warmer months, as the museums are closed in the winter.

Training and interpretive information will be provided. Tour Guides may sign up for shifts based on their availability. Students will have an opportunity to cultivate skills of interacting with the public while facilitating engaging experiences, along with the opportunity to learn about local history, how to build museum interpretations, and how to question accepted narratives of history. Tours do not need to be memorized.

CLC YMCA After School program: Thrive at the Y

CLC YMCA’s after school care program is looking to fill a couple of staff positions for 2-3 hours in the afternoons on weekdays a few times per week. Midcoast Conservancy Summer Youth Conservation Corps

Our Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) crew will be working to protect the Damariscotta Lake watershed by installing Best Management Practices (BMPs) to reduce erosion and nonpoint source pollution in our lake. Nonpoint source pollution reaches our water resources in the form of stormwater runoff that has picked up pollutants such as fertilizers, soil, and pesticides that decrease water quality.
We are hiring two crew members that will help implement these BMPs around the watershed over the course of 8 weeks. HIGH SCHOOL Estuarine Ecology Internship

The University of Maine Darling Marine Center is seeking a high school intern–a rising junior, senior or recent graduate–to contribute to an engaged research project that integrates ecology, education, and ecosystem-based management. This internship is for 8 weeks (end of June-early August 2022) and will be based at the Darling Marine Center in Walpole, Maine.

The intern will contribute to an integrated community-led monitoring in the Damariscotta River Estuary. The intern will learn biological field methods and help to study the Damariscotta ecosystem and its shellfish fisheries. The intern will be compensated $15/hour and be expected to work 15-25 hours per week during the 8 weeks.

Requirements: This position will include physically demanding activities and outdoor fieldwork. Competitive candidates must be self-motivated and demonstrate willingness to contribute to monitoring and education in coastal marine ecosystems. This position will also include engaging with community members; strong communication skills are essential. Competitive candidates will have completed biology, oceanography, or upper level science courses and be capable of working independently, as well as in a team. Access to local housing and a personal vehicle are necessary for this position.
